Let’s continue our sewing journey. Now a days many of the females are wearing churidar. It goes well with long kurtis, and yes, of course anarkali is always accompanied by churidar. Today we will learn how to stitch churidar .
Sewing Churidar Tutorial
We should always cut churidar on bias cloth to get the perfect ankle chudis. Also bias cloth gives the maximum stretch required for churidar.
Drafting Churidar
Instructions:
1-2= length – waist belt width +6″or you can take 8″,10″ as req.
1-4 and 6-5 = hip round/4
4-5 and 1-6 = hip round/3
5-7= 2″
1-8= knee length-waist belt width (to measure knee length keep point 0 of MT where you tie the belt and measure till the knee)
8-9= knee round/2+1″
2-3= ankle round/2+1″
For sewing churidar the cloth required is about 2.25 mt.
Fold the cloth in half length wise,and then fold it to get bias cloth.The snap will explain it.
Cutting churidar
Now keep the paper pattern on it and cut along the lines.If your fabric is plain then don’t worry 🙂 simply cut both leg parts. But if it is printed then be careful while cutting as we have to see that the printed part is in one direction only so cut both the leg parts differently.
After cutting you’ll have to add patch to both the parts esp.in area of 1-4-5-6.This happens as our cloth is bias.Join the patches with pin and then sew the patches.In the below snap I have marked it with RED LINEhope you will understand.
Sewing Churidar:
First of all fold along the line 2-3.Now keep the right sides of both leg parts on one another and sew along the crotch line 6-7 and finally sew along the seams as shown below in black line and the red line.Below the red line you’ll have to fix hook or tich buttons 🙂 as they make a sound of tich when pressed and your churidar is half done. Now make the waist belt take the cloth left from sides and to stitch see HERE and attach it to the churidar.

What does “hip round/4” and “hip round/3” mean? I am very new at this and I don’t always understand the lingo.
What exactly are the patches? I’m very confused about that part.

“hip round/4” means hip measurements divided by 4. In this post patches means the joint. As the fabric is less for the whole pattern we add another fabric i.e the joint. In the next month I’ll upload a video tutorial on churidar which will help you. Hope you will subscribe our channel, so that you won’t miss the video.
In the example, you are using a printed fabric. Did you cut each leg separately?
Also, if my ankle measures exactly 9″ around, do I make the ankle mark for 4 1/2″ exactly, or do I add any extra?

Yes, each leg was cut separately.
In ankle measurement add 1″ as seam allowance.
In my all sewing tutorials I’ve added seam allowance by using the plus (+) sign and 1″ or 1.5″.
Hello Phenji. I’m interested in sewing a churidar salwar but I have a question. Does this pattern makes a fitting chruridar pajama or is it the loose kind? Or is it fitting frm knee and below bout loose on the top? I’m looking for a pattern that fits well as i love pajama’s but it’s hard to find a good tailor for it.
Or maybe can I have a picture with your final sewing so I can actually see how does your pattern look when it is worn?

In the churidar tutorial we have take seam allowance. Now it’s your choice which type you need it. You can loose it from thigh and fitting below knees.

What if we cannot cut on bias ? Can I still stitch the churidar ??
If you don’t cut on bias the fitting will be different as the fabric won’t stretch.Well you can still stitch the churidar but the outcome will be like pyjama.
When cut as shown in the picture when you unfold are the two legs? Or do you have to cut two separate times to get both legs? After you cut the first time how do you cut the second leg( if necessary ) ?

Yes Dear, when you will unfold it you will get cutting of two legs. Hope this clears your doubt.
